3.7 Dixon Farms

Roy & Shelley Dixon and family operate Dixon Farms at 689 Route 16, Point de Bute, less than 15 minutes from town. The farm consists of approximately 320 beef cattle – a cow/calf operation as well as taking all of the calves through to finish. The Dixons have been farming for over 35 years and have consistently grown over the years to get where they are today. Two adult children are an active part of the farming operation, helping with the daily routine, plus everyone works endless hours during harvest.

As producers for the CSA, you are insured a high-quality product, guaranteed free from antibiotics and growth hormones. The slaughter animals are ALL born and raised on the farm and sent to a licensed slaughter house for processing where they are hung for approximately 14 days before cutting and wrapping.

They have been selling beef from the farm for many years by the side or quarter. Approximately two years ago they went an extra step and started direct-selling beef from the freezer (or fresh when possible) in any quantity selected by their customers. Response has been great so far, which is no surprise – local beef tastes better than anything that is trucked in to the grocery store! No order is too big or too small…for example, you can purchase a package of ground beef, or you can choose any cut you wish up to whatever amount you wish. They try to keep a wide variety on hand, however, occasionally the freezers get depleted and customers may have to wait a week or two until they are stocked again. They take orders for special cuts and aim to fill orders within 2 – 3 weeks.

Because the situation with beef is so different from vegetables, the Dixons encourage customers to visit them so they can see first-hand what is available and if the farm can supply their needs. Currently, if you order a side or quarter of beef, they will deliver in the Sackville and surrounding area. In the future, “packages” will be offered with various cuts and prices with delivery available as well.

Over the past few years, it has become evident that everyone should work toward a goal of selling ALL beef this way. Awareness is growing, but has a long way to go. By selling local, animals won’t be stressed by spending endless hours on a tractor-trailer loaded full and bound for Quebec or Ontario. It also translates into energy savings and minimizes the environmental impact by reducing the distance your food travels.

Please feel free to call and ask questions or come and visit.  If you are driving by, please feel free to drop in or call to arrange a time….they will be happy to serve you!    Phone number is 506-536-1964 or email sdixon@nbnet.nb.ca
